Lieutenant Harold Dickinson was one of those killed. He came to South Africa as a Trooper with the First Contingent and took part in the charge at New Zealand Hill on 15^th January 1900, near Colesberg, under Captain William Madocks. He was one of the men with South African experience, now an officer, who joined the Seventh Contingent in New Zealand.
