The first drive had failed to capture their principal target but a second, much larger scale drive was now planned. A segment of the Transvaal to the south of the Natal railway would be the initial target when the line would wheel right and sweep down the north eastern Free State between the Wilge River and the Drakensberg. This time nearly thirty thousand troops were involved and the drive would take nearly two weeks.
