The unsuspecting British were taken completely by surprise. They suffered 145 casualties in the fight, including 57 killed and de Wet left as dawn broke with 200 prisoners and two guns. A rider was sent to Elands River Bridge to summon assistance but by the time the Imperial Light Horse had galloped the 12 miles to the scene of the engagement, de Wet and his men were long gone.
